BASIS OF OPERATION

Laurelbrook School operates a vocational instruction program, because "useful manual labor” is a part of the gospel plan. “Students who have gained book knowledge without gaining a knowledge of practical work cannot lay claim to a symmetrical education."
Ellen G. White, Counsels to Teachers, p. 307

We believe it is part of God's plan that each young person should learn the skills and knowledge of practical work and should be able to support themselves with some trade or manual art, if need be. Therefore, along with our scholastic and religious training, we also provide a Vocational Instruction Program in which each student is required to participate for the entire time they are enrolled at Laurelbrook. Each student is required to take part in all three phases of the program. The student is not working for the school on an employment basis, but has the opportunity to learn to develop good workmanship through the Vocational Instruction Program. Since much of the students’ time is spent in the Vocational Instruction Program, the school does give each student a “scholarship” credit which is applied to his student expenses while here at Laurelbrook. It is understood that this scholarship is incidental to the training of the student.

Student scholarships are based on the students evaluation in three areas:
(a) Students' citizenship (given by deans, teachers, supervisors, and school administration);
(b) Academic classes (current GPA); and
(c) Vocational instruction grade.

If a student is here for the full summer session, they are awarded an average summer scholarship of $1,100.00.  If they attend half of the summer session, they are awarded an average summer scholarship of $550.00. If students attend for other time periods, they are awarded a pro-rated summer scholarship.  The summer scholarship is divided by 9 and awarded each month from September through May.

The room and board for the full summer session is $1,512.00 and for half the summer session it is $756.00.  Any other time periods are pro-rated.

Because the Vocational Instruction Program is an integral part of the students’ education, they participate in it for approximately one-half of their day. This includes instructional time and lab time.

Each student is awarded a base educational scholarship just for attending Laurelbrook's vocational instruction program. The average base educational scholarship is approximately $450.00 per month.

An additional scholarship is availabe based on their evaluation grade as follows:
Grade                                       Scholarship

A+                                            $195.00
A                                              $170.00
B+                                            $150.00
B                                              $110.00
C+                                              $50.00
C                                                $30.00
C-                                                 $0.00
D                                                  $0.00

After all scholarships are applied, the average monthly bill will be between $500 and $700 per month.  This figure is based upon the students combined grade for vocational instruction, GPA and citizenship.

Effective September 2008, at the beginning of each month we will bill each student $600 per month minus the student's summer scholarship credit.  Payment will be due before the first of the next month.  We will adjust the student's bill at the end of the month for their vocational scholarship.

MULTI-STUDENT DISCOUNT

If you have more than one child enrolled at Laurelbrook, the school will give each student a $50.00 per month discount.

PAYMENT OF ACCOUNTS

The school is dependent upon the prompt payment of student accounts for its operating cash since it has no subsidy and must pay its bills each month.

1. Student statements are mailed at the beginning of each month. We give a three percent discount if the bill is paid in full within 12 days.
2. The Delinquent Account Policy is as follows:

a. Accounts become delinquent if not paid within 30 days and the student will then be placed on Financial Probation and will be suspended from activities incurring additional charges to his/her account.  They will forfeit all leaves until such time as the account is brought current.
b. When an account is 60 days in arrears, the student is subject to being suspended from all academic classes until such time as the account is brought current.
c. When an account is 90 days in arrears, the student is subject to Financial Dismissal. Reinstatement to the program requires that the account must be paid in full and the student must apply for readmission.
-----------------------------
*Exceptions to this policy will only be considered when acceptable arrangements have been made with the Business Office and approved by the school administration. Failure to implement any portion of this policy does not preclude its implementation at a later time.

3. No Release of Transcript will be issued for an account that is not paid in full.
4. A senior student's account must be paid in full before he/she is allowed to participate in the graduation exercises, except by special action of the Executive Committee.
5. Credit for the Vocational Instruction Program is not payable in cash; neither is it possible to transfer this credit to another school; nor may it be applied to the account of another student. Any credit left on the account of a withdrawing student is automatically transferred to the Worthy Student Fund.

TITHING

The school teaches and encourages the return of tithe and offerings as an integral part of the religious instruction.

WORTHY STUDENT FUND

The school maintains a Worthy Student Fund to help students who have financial problems. To be eligible for grants from this fund, a student must be willing to accept responsibility, be a positive influence for good, maintain a satisfactory scholarship record, have a real financial need, and been in attendance for at least one year. Request for Worthy Student funds should be made in writing to the Dean's and Principal's Committee. Grants from this fund will be made to the needy student upon the recommendation of this committee and will be applied monthly to his/her account. Contributions to this fund are tax deductible.

FINES

Fines for misbehavior or restitution are to be paid in cash. If the fines are not paid within a reasonable amount of time, they are doubled and charged to the student account. It is the responsibility of the student to see that these fines are paid.
