David Moses Speaks About Sin Services at the Laurelbrook Seventh-day Adventist Church on July 18, 2009 began with a Sabbath School song service led by Lois Davis, accompanied by Shamarii King. A visitor also accompanied the song service on her violin. Tiffany (junior) had prayer and read the scripture reading. David (senior) then welcomed everyone.
Maureen (9th grader) then read a mission report. Karl (sophomore) and Argie (junior) collected the Laurelbrook Missions Offering, which helps students and staff members go on mission trips. Karl played a piano solo for special music. David concluded with a few remarks about salvation via presentation and closed with prayer. The adult section of the congregation became one Sabbath School class studying “Turning Away From Sin”; the students studied a lesson from the Young Disciples organization. The adult class was taught by Chuck Hess.
When services resumed at 11:00, David Moses had the invocation or opening prayer. Chuck Hess welcomed everyone and made the necessary announcements. Vespers would be in the church at 8:15 p.m. He mentioned that the court case was decided in Laurelbrook’s favor and praised the Lord for this favorable outcome. Everyone then sang “Faith Is the Victory”. Chuck Hess had the Morning Prayer and called for the offering, which was for women’s ministry; and Karl and Kiasi (elementary student) collected the offering. The congregation sang the doxology, and Eugene Avila prayed for the offering. For the scripture reading, Eugene Avila read Matthew 4:1-11 responsively with the congregation “1 ¶ Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in [their] hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.”
Shamarri King sang a vocal solo for special music. Elizabeth Padin told the children a story. David Moses preached on “Tempted of the Devil”, the congregation sang “Jesus Saves”, and Eugene Avila had closing prayer.

Following are notes on the sermon:
1. Christ is now in the Most Holy Place in the Heavenly Sanctuary.
2. Our purpose is to vindicate the Father’s name.
3. Romans 5:20-21 “20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
4. Ellen White says that religion that makes light of sin is the religion of many church members. These must leave the world and its customs and its practices and focus on Christ.
5. Laurelbrook is here for the purpose of character-building.
6. We must watch and pray lest we put our eyes on the wrong things and not on Jesus.
7. Matthew 4:1 “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.”
8. In order to catch a rat, you first have to temp him.
9. 1 Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].”
10. God will not let us be overcome if we put our trust in Him. We can overcome sin if we trust in Him.
11. 1 Corinthians 10:14 “Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.”
12. A lot of people believe that a person cannot overcome sin even with the help of God.
13. Only when there is a possibility of yielding is a temptation a temptation.
14. We can overcome temptation if we keep a firm hold on divine power – righteousness by faith.
15. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he was given temptations 100 times stronger than any we endure. We can have this divine power to overcome the temptations we are given.
16. Christ took on our fallen human nature and withstood every temptation. Galatians 4 says that God sent forth His son to be made of a woman under the law.
17. Hebrews 2:14-18 “14 ¶ Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For verily he took not on [him the nature of] angels; but he took on [him] the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto [his] brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things [pertaining] to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.”
18. This says that Christ was of the seed of Abraham.
19. Romans 1:3 “Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;” This says that Christ had the seed of David.
20. Christ will ever be a part of us, our Big Brother, because He overcame sin.
21. In the New Testament, Paul says we can have victory over sin. Philippines 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
22. 1 John 3:4-10 “4 ¶ Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.”
23. If we say that God cannot enable us to overcome sin, then God is really powerless to help us.
24. God deals with each person as they are. But if we gain light about a subject, then we are sinning when we don’t follow that light. We are turning our backs on God.
25. We can do nothing about sin of ourselves, but with God’s help we can. We must surrender all and comply with God’s instructions and grow in the Christian life and experience.
26. We must study God’s Word to make sure our opinions are according to His Word.
27. God gives His grace and power to all who surrender themselves to Him. But at His Coming we can be too late in accepting Him.
28. God can keep us from falling. Jude 24 “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present [you] faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,”
29. When you are tempted, you should pray and ask God for strength. Prayer is so powerful that one man could ask the earth to stop spinning.
30. Satan could find nothing in Christ to help the devil gain the victory. John 14:30 “Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.”
31. Unfortunately, we like playing with sin like a baby giraffe getting too close to a lion laying down and getting caught and eaten despite the giraffe’s mother calling and warning him.
32. “Rude” can mean “ignorance”. In other words, we are often “rude” to God through our neglect of God’s power.
33. Satan is like a roaring lion looking for prey. If we want to escape his clutches, we must stay close to God and His power.
34. Our institutions were to counteract the influences of the world and counteract worldly appetite. They were to keep their focus on God’s Light so they glorify the Father. |
