Everyone Enjoys the Fun Fair
.
David tries to shave a balloon. After being delayed a week due to rainy weather, the yearly Fun Fair took place in Laurelbrook’s circle area the evening of August 27. The Fun Fair began soon after 6:30 with a welcome by Roger Westfall, vice-president for personnel, and Maudie Westfall, the acting assistant academy principal.

Then participants enjoyed a nice supper. If they wished hay stacks, they could get them from a table manned by kitchen personnel. But if they wanted something different like corn dogs, special soy ice cream, or a doughnut, they had to pay a small fee. No money? No problem – staff member Louis Pina was on hand to give out pennies to those in real need.

After supper, the evening’s activities began. Arranged in a semi-circle were all sorts of activities. One could try to throw a baseball and plunge someone into a tank of nice cold water. Catching an apple with only your teeth, throwing a dart and hitting a balloon, shaving a balloon, throwing a basketball into a basketball hoop, and throwing a tennis ball into a bin were just some of the other activities available.

As the evening shadows began to gather, the group moved into the auditorium. A student group – Chuckie (senior), Eilesh (sophomore), Trevor (9th grader), and Katie (junior) – led out in group singing. Staff member James Brenneman had a few thoughts about the fun the redeemed can expect to have in heaven, and the evening was over (except for the cleanup).

A highlight of the evening was a visit by Ron Oxentenko, the new Laurelbrook president, his wife Sharon, and daughters Becky and Heidi.
