Maricel de la Pena and Akia Gore Wed
.
Maricel and Akia Gore cut the wedding cake.Maricel de la Pena (assistant girls’ dean) and Akia Gore (one of the institutional chefs) were married in a wedding ceremony in the Ogden Road Seventh-day Church that involved nearly all the Laurelbrook Academy students in one way or another.

The ceremony began with an organ prelude by Donna Kanna, Laurelbrook’s music director. The parents were seated. The wedding attendants marched in. Six of the boys were from the academy and all seven of the girls. A number of children took part, including the son of Joel Padin (boys’ dean) and two daughters of Richard Schoonard (Laurelbrook operations chief). Then the bride marched in with her father.

The actual wedding program began with a welcome by Debbie Simmons, mother of two Laurelbrook academy sophomores and friend of the bride. Then Argie and Karl, two members of the academy music ensemble, played a clarinet duet. David Moses, the academy freshmen and junior Bible teacher, gave a brief sermonette. Matthew (academy 9th grader) played a piece on the piano. Then Pastor Larry Owens, former Laurelbrook and Ogden Road pastor, conducted the marriage ceremony and presented the new couple.

The couple marched out, received congratulations in the church foyer, and went to the reception, which was held in the church fellowship hall.
